It is now a few weeks since we all woke up to the news that the Tories have a majority in parliament. They also dominate all the local councils in Surrey (even more than before). The need for SOSiS has never been greater.
One good thing that has come out of the election campaign is the willingness of the Green Party, the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition and some Labour Party activists to commit to working together in SOSiS, alongside trade unions and communities to defend our public services. These are the ones who are not just around at election time.
Our next meeting is on Weds 10 June 7pm at the Maybury Centre in Woking to look at where we are in Surrey after the elections and what we need to do now. The cuts to Fire Services, Care Homes and Childrens Centres are very much a live issue and we will need to work out how we can support local campaigners on these issues and more.
It is becoming even more important that we develop local (borough-based) groups as Surrey is such a large place. If you are interested in starting one locally please let us know.
Some events of interest are:
Peoples Assembly demonstration against austerity in London on 20 June. We will probably arrange to meet at Surrey train stations again.
National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) Conference in London on Saturday 4th July. This is always an amazing event. The Fire Brigades Union have just affiliated for the first time and Matt Wrack, General Secretary, will be a keynote speaker. Go to www.shopstewards.net for more info.
