Next Save Our Services meeting
Weds 12th November 7pm
Maybury Centre
Board School Road, Woking
(accessible building, fairly close to railway station and on-site free parking).
The main topic for this meeting will be:
SOSiS and the 2015 elections.
Through our trade union reps, our links to residents associations and community groups, we regularly reach tens of thousands of ordinary people in Surrey with our message of defending and supporting public services and public sector workers.
In May next year, the people of the UK will be offered the chance to vote in the general election and in many local council elections. Clearly, SOSiS will not be silent during this time but we do need to discuss what our position should be in these important elections - when faith in the mainstream Westminster elite is at an all-time low and all that the main political parties can offer is further austerity and cuts.
Our cherished NHS is actually in danger of disappearing altogether into the private sector. Our loved public services such as day centres, care homes and libraries are under threat as they have never been before. The campaign against the proposed closure of six Surrey Elderly Care Homes will be in full swing by May next year.
A number of alternative, left-of-centre parties and coalitions have emerged, all trying to fill the gap left by the Labour Party's move to the centre right. The National Health Action (NHA) Party is standing a GP against Jeremy Hunt in SW Surrey - what should SOSIS position be on this? The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) may stand again in Spelthorne or elsewhere in Surrey. There may well also be some good Labour, Green and other candidates willing to make a stand against cuts.
And what do we do about Ukip? Nationally they compete with Margaret Thatcher for the title of most right-wing, anti-public sector, anti-progressive party but locally some of them are trying to put on a more 'progressive' face.
All these issues and more will be discussed at the meeting on 12th. You are more than welcome to come and have your say.
It will be useful to know if you are coming.
