I am writing to update everyone on the situation in Woking. There have been some small successes in holding back some of the cuts - with community services and charities taking over some services. Whether this remains sustainable in the medium to long term we shall see.
The bulk of the massive cuts programme continues, however, and Save Our Services in Surrey are calling for support for any candidates in the current council elections who are prepared to make a stand and say no to the cuts, link up with the various community organisations and services, the trade unions and others to demand the government takes some responsibility for the current financial mess (made by their party whilst in office).
As far as we are aware, only the 3 candidates standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) are pushing for this approach and have promised not to vote for cuts if elected.
In Surrey, TUSC is relatively small and unknown so it is an uphill task for these 3 brave candidates.
You can find out more about TUSC (who are the 6th biggest group standing in the council elections across the UK) here: www.tusc.org.uk.
If anyone is able to support them, please let me know by reply and I can send details of the wards where they are standing etc.
If you want some of their flyers to deliver locally also let me know.
They are organising a couple of leafletting sessions:
This Monday evening (22nd) and Tuesday evening (30th)
and a stall in the town centre on Sunday 28th April from 11-1.
Let me know if you want further information about any of this.
Finally, the West Surrey Trades Council have arranged a rally for International Workers Day (May Day) on Saturday 4th May at 2pm in Jubilee Square, Woking - all welcome.
